Lego to discontinue Mindstorms robot line after a 24-year run
According to arsTECHNICA, "Lego [is] to discontinue Mindstorms robot line after a 24-year run".
Lego will focus more on the line aimed at the education market.

Hi,
I would like to cite an older post from one of our moderators:

"Lego topics are certainly not probihited in this forum. However, in most cases, they fit better into Off-Topic"
The only uses of Lego I like to read about, are Fotoopa's wonderful models, where he combines the best of both universes.
Best regards
Esther

Liebe Esther,
I disagree with your statement! Obviously, it is of the utmost interest to us if LEGO decides to discontinue the Mindstorm series. This decision may open a large range of possibilities to grow into fields that were previously dominated by LEGO.
Viele Grüße
Thomas

Hallo Thomas,

Hi all,
Who knows, perhaps ft can fill in the void someday... Anyway, to see Mindstorms go away is very sad.

Hi Rei
I share your hopes for a good continuation of the TXT 4.0 project.
It's been pretty quiet since the release of TXT 4.0 firmware 3.1.0 last October.
The industrial robots have disappeared from the FT range.
With RoboPro coding, which only delivers a subset of Python, programming more complex robot control software such as the old "TeachIn" program has become a messy task. The original RoboPro (a 4G language) was a lot stronger, but it certainly had its limitations.
The alternative, MS-Visual Studio code (free) for, among other things, remote development of Python code, does not work well.
The problem is the discontinuities in the connection between the TXT4.0 and the development system.
In terms of content, it works very well, MS-VS code provides very good support for remote development and testing of Python code.
Furthermore, the settings of the Apache web server and the MQTT broker cannot be modified on the TXT4.0.
The user account has too few rights.
And so, there are more small but important points that stand in the way of bringing the power of the TXT4.0 to full maturity.

Re: Lego to discontinue Mindstorms robot line after a 24-year run
Re: Lego to discontinue Mindstorms robot line after a 24-year run
The original Robo Pro brought robot programming at a higher abstraction level closer to the end user and therefore also the young people.
RoboPro coding, a text generator for a small subset of Python, brings the elementary aspects of simple imperative programming closer to the end user.
RoboPro beautifully hid the low-level aspects of (semi-)parallel processes from the end user
But that type of text generators has been around since the 1980s and some even with executable pre and post conditions.
However, for the more complex aspects of Robot programming, it is quite confusing.
Python is a nice interperter bound language but is relatively slow.
So the question that follows from Rei's contribution is: where LEGO dies with its controller, is the TXT4.0 in combination with the accompanying program development environment a strong future?
With the emphasis on the development environment, the controller itself has a lot to offer, and that probably won't be the problem

Re: Lego to discontinue Mindstorms robot line after a 24-year run
Hallo...
fishfriend

Re: Lego to discontinue Mindstorms robot line after a 24-year run
Rei's comment also directly relates to the TXT4.0 and the developments in the software. That's why it fits well in this section. Especially when I look at some other topics.
Rei started in English, in the reactions that aspect is sometimes missing.
The silence around the TXT4.0 firmware and imperfections worry me.
Will this be the next controller after the TX-C and the TXT that will soon be stopped with bugs and immature things.
Unfortunately, some part of the TXT has its source code not released after the "end of live". As a result, imperfections in the TXT firmware cannot be resolved.
With the TX-C, those imperfections were a lot bigger, even a complete connector was never made functional.
Placing development entirely with 3rd party organizations seems to cause problems every time.
The TXT4.0 lacks root access but also some other accounts and the extensibility of the limited Python subset in RoboPro coding.
But good open source like with LEGO has ultimately not led to a robust continuity.

Re: Lego to discontinue Mindstorms robot line after a 24-year run
Lego is not open source at all. Just like fischertechnik they only publish what they are obliged to publish.
E.g. the Spike is using Micropython and we'd really like to see the source code of the Python parts themselves. But this only comes as compiled mpy code. See e.g. https://github.com/gpdaniels/spike-prime/issues/6

Re: Lego to discontinue Mindstorms robot line after a 24-year run
The EV3 runs Linux and just like fischertechnik with the Linux based TXT they are obliged to release the source code. And they do this in a way that suggests that this is a kind of generous effort to support their community ...vleeuwen hat geschrieben: ↑02 Nov 2022, 16:19I probably misunderstood this page:
