Sound+Lights-Modul Qualität / Sound+Lights-Module quality

Beitrag von rubem » 21 Sep 2021, 16:43

Hi everyone,

I'm starting to use the Sound+Lights-Module for my pinball project, but there are three problems with it:

- The sound quality is too bad.
- The sound volume is too low.
- There is a very audible "click" when the sound finishes playing.

Do you guys have any experience with it? I know @DirkW used it for his brilliant "Pirates of the Caribbean" pinball table, maybe he has some answers.

Thanks in advance!

Rubem

Hallo allerseits,

Rubem

Hi Stefan and Holger,

Hmmm... Okay, so if you are both recommending alternatives I must conclude that these problems are inherent to the original ft modules. Anyway, if there are any tricks that can be used to improve their sound I'd still like to know, I'm not sure I'll change them at this point.

Thanks for the ideas so far!

Hallo...
There are rules for toys, that they are not to much loud fore the childrens ears.
I think that the only way ist, to make a amplify load file and then transfer it to the module.
Or modify it, like a extern booster with the signal from the sorce.
Best regards

Of course, that makes sense.

Hehe, I fear that amplifying the sound will also amplify the noise and the annoying "click" sound ;) I'll probably order an MP3 module anyway, they are super cheap. Let's see...

Thanks again,

Hi again,

So in the end I've purchased a very cheap (about €4.30) DFPlayer clone and, after some code tweaks, finally my project can enjoy any number of high quality sounds with a decent volume. That's bye-bye for the ft sound modules, unfortunately. The DFPlayer comes with a SD card slot, USB pins (didn't try those out yet), accepts both WAV and MP3 files up to 48 kHz and can drive a small speaker directly. It uses a simple serial protocol, any two Arduino ports can be used via a 1 kΩ resistor. Here it is, with a speaker taken from a discarded JBL headphone:

IMG_20211001_091810970.jpg (123.33 KiB) 1732 mal betrachtet

For those who'll like to experiment with this little board, here's the reference: https://wiki.dfrobot.com/DFPlayer_Mini_SKU_DFR0299. In the first tests the sample Arduino code worked fine by itself, but in the real world, i.e. with several things (like asynchronous delays and I²C) happening at the same time, the Arduino froze randomly after just a few sounds. The solution was to reduce the DFPlayer timeout from 500 to 50 or less. This is not documented anywhere, though. I found it by trial and error.

Best,

Rubem
