Broken chain link 128659

Hi,

To my surprise and dismay I managed to break a chain link 128659 at 1 side on the place where the hook begins. Looking at the price of € 0,20 and s/h, it's hardly worth to order a replacement so instead I'm thinking of using glue to fix it. If any, with what glue would this work?

Hello hvn,

we use in such cases, normal superglue.

With such small parts -like the chain link- it is tricky, and I'm not sure if it will hold permanently.

Hi hvn,

the (old red) chain is rated to withstand something around 3 N (approx 6,6 pounds [Avoirdupois (U.S.)] - 8 pounds [Troy]) and I think no glue will manage to give at least 1/10 of this force. The cross sectional areas are too small to allow any glue to get enough grip there. Some people claim that formic acid will give some better results for it dissolves the material at the surface and then the parts get cemented together. Handling formic acid is dangerous and again considering the size of the chain link its application might ruin the part even worse. Not to mention that severe experience with such repairs is necessary.

My suggestion:
Take a note on your ft shopping list - and consider to buy a complete bag of chain links instead a single one:
* 129085 - 116 chain links
* 137341 - 176 chain links
Hope your pocket money allows for this.

Regards

@ HARRY
Nice that you take care of our parts sales :D
As already written, I find it rather difficult to glue the parts (with any glue).
