Aha,

Re: Competition Ahead: What Will Be fischertechnik's Answer?

Re: Competition Ahead: What Will Be fischertechnik's Answer?

Re: Competition Ahead: What Will Be fischertechnik's Answer?
Hi,
I²C (bzw. - wem das was sagt).
H.A.R.R.Y.

Re: Competition Ahead: What Will Be fischertechnik's Answer?
When I understand correctly the biggest advantage of the EV3 is the open software and possibly the bigger display. There are however some disadvantages for use with ft: not compatible with RoboPro (so you would have to use the Lego programming system) and incompatible hardware (connectors, encoder motors, distance sensors).
So is the EV3 an alternative for the TX? I don't think so.
Would you like ft to lauch something comparable? Well I guess they are already thinking about the next model but for making it open source we do not need new hardware and a bigger display can be added via I2C. I'm a big fan of open source but I fear that ft will not be going that way, even the obsolete RoboInterface was never laid open.
Another question is what is lacking with the current programming model? After all it is programmable in both online and offline mode, we have access to the display, I2C and bluetooth. I'll give you that the cooperative timeslice approach is not the most attractive programming model. Also with open software and hardware we could develop the long expected but never to come camera ourselves.
RPi and Arduino were mentioned as alternatives, please note that these have no directly compatible I/O, nor display. The RPi has a very limited GPIO connector but, for what it's worth has HDMI and audio.
To make the RPi useable in an ft project you would need to develop input and output interfaces, or, maybe better, communication interfaces to the TX, RI, IIF or Ext.module. The advantage: you have a Linux programming environment, if it is sufficiently real-time I don't know.
Almost the same is true for Arduino, you will need shields, motor- and sensor shields are available and can probably be adapted for ft use, or, alternatively, use a communication interface as indicated above. On Arduino there is no Linux, instead programming is practically bare-metal, although the libs are easy to use and share.
So I think it is mainly what you're used to, Linux fans grab a Pie, Arduino fans build some shields, RoboPro fans stick to what you have.

@Ford
I don't think we disagree and yes I have seen your contribution in ft:pedia, it is a very valuable article. I just wanted to assess the advantages from a user point of view of other solutions over the TX.
Thanks for pointing to websites in other languages but I can read German quite well (as indeed English, Dutch and French).
What, according to you is the main reason to use the EV3 system i.o. the TX?

Re: Competition Ahead: What Will Be fischertechnik's Answer?
- Yes a quadrature encoder is a great plus, ft offers it now on their 24V SPS motors but not on the TX. Bad decision from ft not to include it in the regular computing line.
- Text programming is possible but indeed not inuitive, I'm trying to get it to work under Eclipse, hope that makes it easier.
- Yes it is a different way of programming, you have to keep a lot of 'state' which makes programming far less inuitive.

Re: Competition Ahead: What Will Be fischertechnik's Answer?
If a take in account the target group of fischertechnik:
The rotary encoder is a good solution for a big group of ft users, especially children.
Easy to understand, works linear and with rotation.
See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotary_encoder
It must be possible to implemented this as a black box on the TX-C with some additional firmware.
Optional M1 combined with C1 and C2.
Optional M3 combined with C3 and C4.
Only the TX-C side implementation is needed. Sensors can easily made by the user himself.

Re: Competition Ahead: What Will Be fischertechnik's Answer?
Hallo zusammen,
Dirk

Dirk

Re: Competition Ahead: What Will Be fischertechnik's Answer?
