Lucky Logic ...

Hallo Fischertechnik Fans,

Peter

There exist a very practical limitation.
There can be a small problem when using the Knoblog converter with the old parallel interface.
The sample rate of the USB is much slower (10 ms refresh rate) then the old parallel port.
So the old puls wheels are not working.

Schade!

Vielen Dank nochmals und eine schöne Adventszeit!

However the parallel interface can be use as a nice front-end for a Raspberry Pi or other micro computer interface.
The actuator drivers a very power full.

Another option is to find a very old computer with a parallel port and an old windows version that support Lucky Logic.
The essential is that you need a real parallel port and a old Windows 3.1 or MS-DOS (around 1991) version that fully support the original parallel port.
Don't connect that old computer to the Internet, it is not secure.
Probably both of these version can be found on the Internet.

Hallo Spitti und anderen,

In English I can explain this better:
I am currently working on exactly the same thing and came over this forum post and I just found a solution that works for the old parallel interface on a new desktop computer (running windows 10). I bought a PCIe parallel interface for 15 euro and got it to work with lucky logic MS-DOS, the old basic programs running in GW-basic and LLwin in windows 98.

I run the required system (eg. MS-DOS, Win95, Win98) in a virtual environment (VMware player, free) that is connected to the parallel port (lpt). This works fine, even the old encoder wheel of the training robot (30572) seem to be captured at the right rate (did not test with the model itself yet).

A slight electronic modification to the interface is necessary as current parallel ports 3.3Volt output in stead of 5V output. As described and with thanks to NachtHacker:
https://www.nachthacker.de/Fischertechn ... gEcke.html

I do not know if it will work with the Robo Connect Box since I do not have one, but if this creates an lpt port it should work as well.

For those who are interested I can send more information if that is appreciated.

Gruss,
Tom

Nice done.
I don't thinkhat the RoboConnectBox will work because it is sampling with a 10 ms rate.

Yes your are right. I think this a problem for the trainingsrobot only. Other old models will work since they do not need the fast sampling rate.

The original XY-plotter was also working nice with the old parallel interface and LL.
Because of it speed, is was able to control steppers.
The newer interface do not working fine with steppers. This because of the PWM.

Hallo...
?
Why PWM with steppers?
The only thing is to reduce the temperature of the steppermotor when he stoped. And that is in your programm, so you contolled it.
The RoboIF has no problem with steppers and I never heard that the TX or TXT has problems.
Can you specified that?

Hi fishfriend,
A stepper motor is normally current controlled and not voltage controlled. The fischertechnik controllers are not offering current control.
A real stepper control is using a kind of PWM for only the rythme of the steps and has a low frequency. The fischertechnik controllers are using high frequency PWM to control the power and is causing vibration.

No current control, no hold current (no stepping, stay in position, less heating), no stepper speed control.
Very hot steppers. No separate power supply for the stepper motors.
Hold position is important and difference from power 0.

Even the original fischertechnik stepper motor needs 590 mA for the max. torque.
(Grouzet France http://media.crouzet.com/datasheets/eng ... f#zoom=100 )

See the difference when using a real stepper controller like for example: the On Semiconductors AMI 30xxx family or the Adafruit DC & Stepper Motor controller .
Luckily with the TXT with the SLI there is a very good way to integrate I2C bases stepper controllers into RoboPro.

Controlling a stepper motor is a little bit more then switching on/off a PWM voltage.

The fischertechnik controllers imho use a pwm frequency of around 200hz. This is even below the step rate of most stepper motors. For proper microstepping you'd need a much higher pwm frequency and you'd might want some filtering to cope with the increasing resistance of the stepper coils at higher frequencies. The txt is actually pretty well suited to control those old stepper motors of the plotter. But the txts firmware especially the one of the motor controller is not designed for this purpose.

And yes, most stepper motors should be current controlled. But the coil resistance is pretty constant and you can run most pretty safe at a given voltage. The old ones from the plotter run just fine at 9v.

Hallo...
Aha OK that´s what you mean.
In my programm I use the PWM to reduce the current.
Some times there are two powersuplies in one Interface circuitry.
With the older gray 814 ... you can reduce also the Power.

At the moment I use an CNC Arduino Shield 3.0...

Hallo Spitti

Hi Eumel,
Give your solution also support for the bidirectional LPT-port at the original high speed in the Windows 3.2/ME version?
Did you test this?
The hardware In the virtual machine is very often not direct connected with the virtual machine; normally there is some security between the hardware and the OS in the virtual machine,
The LPT-port was already make more secure in the one of the older Windows version. And that was also blocking the LPT port as almost complete un-protected high speed connection. As I can remember.
The L.L. was accessing the LPT directly at BIOS-level and bypassing the low level Windows divers. Using directly the BIOS was only possible in the beginning of Windows.
L.L. was using the hardware of the LPT port and it was not complying to the more strict LPT definition.
